The NanoTherm® therapy in detail
The particles, which contain iron oxide, are then activated during six one-hour sessions in the NanoActivator® by an externally applied, rapidly alternating magnetic field, which generates heat. This either destroys the tumour cells or sensitizes them to additional treatment approaches such as radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. The effectiveness of these additional therapies is significantly improved while at the same time, the surrounding tissue is spared.
Course of treatment
1.
Analysis of the tumor
First, the tumor is measured using an imaging method, e.g. computer tomography, MRT or PET. Thus, the dose and position for the injection of the nanoparticles can be optimally planned.
2.
Instillation of nanoparticles into the tumor
The physician instils or applies the NanoTherm® liquid precisely at the desired location. S/he also establishes access in the form of a catheter for direct temperature measurement and monitoring in the treatment area during the first NanoActivator® session.
3.
Several treatment sessions in the alternating magnetic field
The NanoActivator® is a specially developed medical device, which generates the alternating magnetic field that activates the nanoparticles, and thus generates the desired temperatures. The patient completes six one-hour sessions over a period of three weeks, gladly accompanied by a companion.
Treatment results
Since 2011, MagForce AG holds the European CE certificate (“European Certification”) and thus official approval of NanoTherm® therapy for the treatment of brain tumors in Germany and all member states of the European Union. The effectiveness of NanoTherm® therapy has already been clinically tested on approximately 90 brain tumor patients and in pilot studies on approximately 80 patients with, inter alia, pancreatic, prostate, breast and oesophageal cancer.A patient’s experiences
Since receiving official approval in 2011, brain tumor patients have been successfully treated using NanoTherm® therapy. One of them reports on his experiences here.
Mateusz Dobrowolski
brain tumor patient
Mateusz Dobrowolski, who is from Poland, received the diagnosis of a brain tumor before he was 30 years old. This was followed by surgery and additional treatment attempts. In 2016 he was treated in Berlin using NanoTherm® therapy with overwhelming success. One and a half years later, he returned for a follow-up visit and met with MagForce for an interview to talk about his personal experiences with the treatment

Frequently asked questions
After a confirmed tumor diagnosis and the introduction of the ferrofluid containing the nanoparticles, NanoTherm®, the actual therapy application for the patient consists of six one-hour sessions on the NanoActivator®. This causes the particles containing iron oxide to warm up through the targeted alternation of the magnetic field, which achieves the desired therapeutic effect. As a rule, these sessions occur twice a week during a three-week period.
Please note that it may still be necessary to remove metallic objects near the tumor (e.g. dental fillings, crowns, implants, artificial joints) or replace them with alternatives made of plastic prior to the treatment. The reason for this: All metals within a radius of 40 centimetres around the tumor can also heat up in the alternating magnetic field.
Patients with non-removable medical implants such as pacemakers, neurostimulators or dosage pumps cannot benefit from NanoTherm® therapy due to possible interference with the magnetic field of the NanoActivator®.
Generally, a session in the alternating magnetic field is nearly completely free of pain and discomfort. The NanoActivator® does not cause claustrophobia such as a computer tomography (CT) or an MRI. Instead, the patient lies comfortably on a bed, which is adjusted to their individual comfort.

The NanoTherm® therapy components, NanoPlan® and NanoActivator®, are certified with the CE symbol as a medical product for the treatment of brain tumors throughout the EU.
NanoTherm® therapy is available to patients from Germany and patients from abroad at selected hospitals in Germany. The opening of the first treatment centre in Lublin, Poland, is being prepared. Additional treatment centres in Italy and other European countries are to follow.
